Chapter Eight

Savi looked around her cottage, knowing it might be the last time she ever saw it. She loved the place; it was always so peaceful. The moment she had stepped through the door, she had felt like she was home. The hardwood floors, the stone fireplace, even the little sunroom and arboretum—all of it was hers. Now, a piece she hadn’t even realized she needed was missing, and she felt a little off. Hell, for the last two weeks, she had felt things she never dreamed of—morning sickness, desolation, and anger. She had been angry before, but now, it was amplified. She wanted retribution, vengeance, and justice for her mate, for everything he had been through, for everything her family put him through. She might never be with him again, but a piece of him was growing inside her, and for that tiny spark’s sake, she would end the madness—once and for all.

Savi had planned and searched. For the last two weeks, she had done nothing but worry and work. Now that Raiden was okay, finally going to shift into his true form, she was ready. It was time.

She found Frank Johns. It had taken some work and several favors, but she had a location. She also knew exactly where her father was and how to get both her targets in the same place at the same time—magic.

Looking around one last time, she said goodbye to her home, thanked the universe for the peace and comfort she had received while living there, and walked out the door, heading for the lake.

Most witches relied on or drew power from the elements—earth, wind, water, and fire. Savi was different. Those elements helped her, but she relied on something else entirely.

She felt Esmeralda as soon as she walked out the door, but Savi ignored her, still too mad to deal with her aunt. When she got to the water’s edge, she couldn’t ignore the question she asked.

“You’re going after him, aren’t you?”

“Someone has to, this has gone on long enough. He has hurt so many people while I have hidden in the woods, hiding my magic. My mother, your sister, paid with her life. My mate paid with his animal. My brother and sisters are paying with their very souls. I’m done waiting for some prophecy to come to fruition. This ends now. Enough is enough.”

“And what if the ultimate price is that of your child’s life, Savannah? What then?”

“I will grieve, I will mourn, just as I have for everyone else in my life, but I will live, and I will make sure no warlock EVER has the power he does. That no warlock becomes insane with power and feels he has the right to use, abuse, and destroy others. I will fight until I cannot fight anymore. That is what I will do.”

“Then, I will help you.”

“You know you can’t.” Savi sighed, turning to her aunt, some of her anger fading.

Esmeralda was a good person, a kind soul, working toward the same thing that Savi was.
